About ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro
In ancient times, due to its strategic position between Italy and Central Europe, the region of Valtellina was home to a large number of castles and defensive fortresses. Many were destroyed; others have not withstood the test of time. Nevertheless, fortunately, some remain, such as Castel Grumello.
In northern Italy, nestled among vineyards and on rocky soils (translated into Italian as grumel) of Sondrio and Montagne, this structure still stands, once belonging to the De Piro family, and serving both defensive and residential purposes. Specifically, it is a castle with two identical parts, hence known as the twin castle, both connected by a section of wall. The Pelizzatti family, current owners of the ARPEPE winery, pays homage to this monument with their red wine ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro.
ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro is a blend that combines grapes from the two vineyards ARPEPE owns in this subzone of the DOC Valtellina Superiore. In this area, the nebbiolo delle Alpi is cultivated, a variation of this typical Italian red grape that develops here with very specific characteristics distinguishing it from those grown in other regions. This is mainly due to the south-facing orientation of the vineyards, benefiting from many hours of sunlight, as well as the rocky, nutrient-poor soils, where the vines develop deep roots in search of the necessary nutrients for their growth. Added to this is the altitude, between 300 and 500 metres above sea level, on the terraces that form the typical landscape of this area. Thanks to all these factors, the nebbiolo, which is usually a variety with very thin skin, develops a thicker skin. Nevertheless, this does not prevent ARPEPE from carrying out the long macerations characteristic of the winemaking in Valtellina. In the case of ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro, the must remains in contact with the skins for a total of 106 days in wooden vats. After this, alcoholic fermentation and a 15-month ageing process take place. During this time, ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro will go through different materials such as wood, cement, and the glass of the bottle.
Following its donation in 1990, Castel Grumello was restored and opened to the public. Today, one can enjoy this great historical legacy. To this privilege is also added ARPEPE Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro: another great monument that must be known (imperatively).
| 2019 | Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro 2019 is a concentrated, ruby-coloured, very seductive and appealing red. Rose petals, wild berries, aromatic herbs and graphite appear on the nose. Tobacco and some touches of leather also appear. The palate is mineral, with soft and silky tannins. Flavours of bitter chocolate, ground coffee and tar. Long, firm and smoky finish. |
|
| 2017 | Svelte, opulent, and gratifying. The concentration of Ar.Pe.Pe. Valtellina Superiore Grumello Rocca De Piro 2017 will pleasantly astonish you. Specifically, it is a red wine with a ruby hue and coral undertones. The bouquet unveils forest scents, leather, and tobacco. On the palate, it is crisp and exceedingly lively. Delectable acidity. Exquisitely balanced. |
