Features Scala Dei Prior 2008
It was during the 12th century that the monks of the Carthusian Order reached the heart of Priorat and built the first Carthusian monastery of the Iberian Peninsula. They chose this location because it was where a shepherd from this area dreamed of a ladder which could reach heaven and through which the angels ascended and descended. Hence the name of this wine (Scala Dei means God’s ladder in Catalan). It was the Carthusian Order which introduced vine growing and wine making in this region and Scala Dei was the first winery that bottled wine under the Qualified Designation of Origin Priorat
. Opening a bottle of Scala Dei is like travelling back in history throughout the senses. The grapes used in the elaboration of Prior
are chosen from selected estates and go through a careful and thorough winemaking process. The wine is aged for one year in French oak barrels and another year in the bottle.
Tasting report Scala Dei Prior 2008
Ruby red colour with maroon edges and violet reflections. Clean and bright wine.
Wine with a high aromatic intensity, which shows outstanding notes of red and black fruit and floral hints reminiscent of violets. Some spicy and toasted aromas provided during the ageing in barrels are also noticed along with a marked minerality.
It is a well-bodied and very well structured red wine
with a tasty, fruity and silky palate. Very balanced wine in which its ripe and elegant tannins are perfectly balanced with its great acidity. Very smooth and round wine with a sweet and persistent finish.
