Characteristics of Vermell de Peguera

Vermell de Peguera is a red wine from the D.O Conca de Barberà produced by the Clos de Peguera winery. This is a single variety wine, made using only Monastrell grapes.

 

The grapes are grown on a vineyard that is shared and cared for between six winemakers. The winery is located at an altitude of 700 metres, is home to calcareous clay soils and is around 20 years old. The grapes used for Vermell de Peguera are harvested manually.

On arrival at the winery, the bunches are totally destemmed before undergoing maceration for 6 days with the skins intact. Following this, alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using native yeasts.

 

Finally, Vermell de Peguera is aged for 4 months in stainless steel tanks, resting for another 8 months in the bottle.

The name of this wine was not just plucked out of thin air. Vermell is the word for red in Catalan, and represents the strong colour of the final product. Xavier Nogué, the man responsible behind this wine, believes that “the name of a wine must match the product and what the product means” (“el nombre de un vino tiene que concordar con lo que es, con lo que significa").

 

Clos de Peguera is a young winery that is located in the heart of the D.O Conca de Barberà. Although relatively new, the winery was founded by Xavier Nogué, who has over 3 decades of experience behind him, having worked in various sectors within the industry.

Winery Clos de Peguera

As with many other Catalonian wine regions, the DO. Conca de Barberà is developing its own territorial identity that over the years has been redefining the personality of the wines and the region, with the help of the red Trepat grape variety. The Trepat grape can be used to produce good sparkling rosés, rosés with character, fresh red wines, as well as elegant blanc de noirs. In just a few years the region and this grape variety have shown their potential, their versatility, and the possibility of carrying out R&D (Research and Development) with them. There are still few wineries who produce single variety wines using the grape, but most importantly is that all of them have become aware of the obligation to enhance the uniqueness that defines its territory and the new style of wine to be imposed in the twenty-first century.
