Characteristics of Vega Sicilia Único

Vega Sicilia Único is an extraordinary red wine made by the Vega Sicilia winery in the Ribera del Duero in Valbuena de Duero in Valladolid.

Vega Sicilia is the most emblematic Spanish bodegas. A historic wine cellar, over 150 years old, which has become a myth, an icon recognized worldwide thanks to the sheer quality of its wines. Vega Sicilia Único is a wine of legend. One of those wines that any amateur longs to taste at least once in their life.

A limited production wine that is made only in the best vintages. It is a blend made from Tinto Fino, with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from the oldest vineyards of the estate owned by the winery in Valbuena de Duero, a farm along the Douro river with alluvial clay-limestone soils.

There is an influence of a continental climate together with Atlantic influence, with little rainfall concentrated in spring and autumn and hot summers with plenty of sunshine. Vega Sicilia is characterized by taking great care throughout the process.

The work begins in the vineyard. Pruning is performed to remove bunches and limit the production of each strain, obtaining grapes with great concentration.

The harvest is done manually, selecting the ripest clusters. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in oak tanks for 15 days at a maximum temperature of 32 ° C. Once completed, it is run off into oak vats where the malolactic fermentation occurs. In these vats, the wine rests for a whole year in order to clarify and settle.

Vega Sicilia Único is aged for at least seven years in French oak manufactured in the cellar. The aging begins in new barrels, and rotates into used barrels with the intention of achieving a perfect balance between wine and wood.

Once bottled, Vega Sicilia Unico rests in the bottle for 3 years before going to market. A long process, which stretches for up to 10 years, gives life to a very special wine, a unique wine.

Tasting notes Vega Sicilia Único

Sight Intense ripe cherry red colour, with a bright edge. Nose Toasted touches from the wood, with nutty notes from the oxidative evolution obtained during its years in the barrel. Taste A great range of flavours of old but clean wood, with dry and pleasantly bitter tannins from the oak, together with sweet hints from the alcohol. It has a very long finish.

Sight It has an intense ripe cherry colour, with lively ruby red edges. Nose In the nose, the toasted notes provided by the wood are dominant. They are released along with the aromas of hazelnuts got during its oxidative evolution during the years in the barrel. Taste It shows a wide range of aromas of clean old wood, with dry and pleasantly bitter tannins provided by the oak, along with the light texture of the sweetness of its alcoholic content. A very long, purebred red wine.
Sight Ripe cherry red colour, extremely high intensity, very dark and deep. Nose Fragrant and complex nose, in which toasted aromas of the wood are dominant, together with extremely ripe fruit and balsamic notes. A wine that can be enjoyed for many hours. Taste This wine is unique, as its own name indicates (English term for “único”), warm, elegant, persistent, kind, round and an endless number of adjectives that could not describe it completely. An excellent red wine from the D.O. Ribera del Duero.
Sight Intense ripe cherry color. Nose Good aroma, ripe fruit, toasted notes and chocolate. Taste Flavor is tasty, complex, ripe tannins and fine bitterness.
