Bodegas Viña Tondonia

D.O.: Rioja

R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is one of the most traditional wineries from Rioja, a family winery which has been producing wines for more than a century, transferring the knowledge of the production of wines from generation to generation. Tradition, love for the land and an exquisite usage of the wooden barrels used for the long ageing of Reserva and Gran Reserva wines are the symbol of identity of this pioneering winery from Rioja.

Founded in 1877, this winery is one of the three first wineries founded in Rioja. Moreover, this is the oldest winery of the municipality of Haro, capital of Rioja Alta, which is located in Barrio de la Estación, the area with more wineries in the world.

Mr. Rafael López de Heredia, its founder, learnt some techniques for the production of wine thanks to its contact with French businessmen settled in the municipality of Haro at the end of the 19th century. Due to a strict customs policy, the French businessmen came back to their country and Mr. Rafael López de Heredia decided to start the production of his own wines.
For the production of Viña Tondonia wines, the winery always used grapes from the area; at the beginning only buying the grapes, but subsequently, the winery started to cultivate its own vineyards. Thanks to this, this winery became the only winery which owns a Diploma de Garantía del Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Rioja (Diploma of Guarantee by the Q.D.O. Rioja Control Board).

In 1913, Mr. López de Heredia purchased and started to cultivate Viña Tondonia, a beautiful 100-hectare vineyard located in the right riverside of the Ebro River, among black poplars, storks, rabbits and ducks, where they began to cultivate the main grape varieties of Rioja: red varieties such as Tempranillo, Grenache, Graciano and Mazuelo and the white varieties Viura and Malvasía. After that, Mr. López de Heredia gradually acquired other close estates: Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo and Viña Gravonia.

The construction of the winery started at the same time that the first vineyards were planted. The residential house for the family, the different cellars, the barrel cellar and a labyrinth of underground warehouses and outstanding special cellars excavated out of rock form an impressive an architectonic modernist whole from the beginning of the 20th century. Its magnificence has well deserved the name "La Catedral del vino" (The Cathedral of Wine).
Going over its underground corridors, one has the feeling that the time has been stopped. At the heart of the winery, some metres below ground, we find "El Cementerio" (The Cemetery). This is a moving room, even mystic. Lit by few lights, and in the middle of a deathly silence, even today we can find some bottles from the first vintage of the winery, dating from the end of the 19th century.

Work philosophy

López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is not any winery. Inside its excavated underground corridors, one can breathe the tradition and feel all the effort made generation after generation for more than a century, transferring all the knowledge acquired by the subsequent generations during a constant pursuit of the maximum respect. For their ancestors, for the land and its fruits, and for the symbols of identity which have turn this winery into something unique.

In the 170 hectares of vineyards spread over the four estates, 800,000 kilos of grapes are annually harvested. The grape harvest is conducted manually, taking the grapes into poplar deposits built in the winery's own barrel-making workshop. This is the first contact of the grapes with the wood, thus beginning a relationship between the two of them which will last for some months for the white wines or even 10 years for the Gran Reserva wines.
The fermentation takes place in big oak vats, and once fermented, the wine is left to stand in oak barrels, where the ageing will be conducted. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia is the only winery that uses barrels exclusively from its own barrel-making workshop for the ageing of its wines.

It is important to emphasise that in López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, not only the red wines are aged. White wines also have their own process of ageing in oak barrels, thus obtaining a special character, which demonstrates once again the importance that the wood has for this winery.

Wines produced by Viña Tondonia

If we talk about the winery López de Heredia Viña Tondonia, we have to talk about the Viña Tondonia family . Viña Tondonia Reserva, one of the great classics of the Spanish wines. Its older brother, Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva, is a wine with the character of the winery, marked by a 10-year-ageing in barrels. Viña Tondonia Reserva Blanco, a very special white wine aged in oak barrels for 6 months.
