Bodegas Remelluri

D.O.: Rioja

Remelluri is an idyllic estate located in the vicinity of Labastida, La Rioja Alavesa, home to over a hundred hectares of vineyards, where the Rodríguez Hermandorea family have managed to recreate their own style of a Bordeaux “château”. Telmo Rodríguez, true to the wine traditions of the region, while restless to innovate with the most modern of winemaking techniques, has led one of the most presitigious wineries in the region with splendid wines that convey the personality of the terroir, with the unique touch of the  and the Remelluri house.

The origin of the Granja de Remelluri is lost in the sands of time. The place known as "Remelluri" was originally a settlement founded in the 10th century by, Count Erramel of Álava. Remelluri, which is the Basque-language equivalent of Villarramel or Villarramiel, still conserves a necropolis that belonged to the early medieval community established there, as well as a cave that is perhaps the oldest vestige of viticultural activity in the area.

In the 14th century, the Granja de Nuestra Señora de Remelluri belonged to the Monastery of Toloño. The Hieroymite monks who received the faithful from across the region in the sanctuary erected atop Mt. Toloño lived at the Granja, or farmstead, where they cultivated grains and tended the vineyards , situated on the summit of the mountain.

The crops produced on the estate enjoy and exceptional microclimate, protected from wind and frost. In the area, many remnants of prehistoric populations can be found, including the Romans, Visigoths and Moors.

The monks left in the fifteenth century, with their shrine on the property being maintained by hermits as a place of worship well into the 1800’s. The farm and monastery depended on the Real Divisa, communal entity to which belonged all the surrounding towns of Toloño. The Real Divisa was in charge of the agricultural land management on the farm, serving the large mass of pilgrims that used to come from all over the world to pray at the shrine.

The oldest account of winemaking in the area dates all the way back to 1596, where the Labastida Town Hall has records of pitchers of wine made by the Nuestra Senora de Remelluri Farm for every year up to the last century. These pitchers, or “cantaras” were a local volume measure, equal to 16,13 litres).

In 1837, the first civil war, the sanctuary was burned by the liberal troops after defeating the Carlist siege of Peñacerrada. In 1845, due to the law of confiscation, land, houses, and even the church of Santa Sabina were sold to the highest bidder. A landowner from Labastida acquired the core part of the land, maintaining the vineyard.

The History and Philosophy of Bodega Remelluri.

Bodega Remelluri, or Granja de Nuestra Señora de Remelluri as it is officially known, spanned across 20 hectares and remained intact until 1967, when it was accquired by Jaime Rodríguez Salis and Amaya Hernandorena. Since then, the estate has been recovering its former land, and currently has an estate of 154 hectares, 105 of which are restored vineyards, while the old monastery has been converted into its present warehouse. Today the vineyards are planted with a vast range of grape varieties, including Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha, as well as the white varieties Garnacha Blanca, Moscatel, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Marsanne and Rousanne, the latter of which is planted at the highest parts of the farm.

The first wines bottled by the Bodega Remelluri came from the 1971 vintage. Since its first vintages, Remelluri has helped set the benchmark for wines in La Rioja, being one of the first wineries in the region to only use grapes from the land on the land directly surrounding the winery. During the 1989 harvest, the son of Jaime, Telmo Rodríguez, took over the winery with his father, after having trained in large wineries in Bordeaux and the Rhone, implementing the personality of the grape and the terroir into the wines. However 5 years later in 1994, they decided to leave the project to start their own project, the wine company Telmo Rodríguez, along with Pablo Equzkiza.

His work is centered on his intuition to detect the best áreas for winemaking, his ability to motivate the best winegrowers of the area,  his knowledge of wine and his great rapport with a selection of major markets around the world. You could say that Telmo is perhaps one of the best “flying winemakers” in the industry, i.e, moving to produce wines from the same vintage in different areas and regions, with his company producing wines in La Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Cigales, Rueda, Toro, Navarra, Somontano, Madrid, Alicante, Malaga, even in the Portuguese Douro.

Telmo Rodriguez returned to the winery in February 2010 as director of the project, combining the work of the winery with that of his own company. His return was welcomed and was a natural process, since Remelluri had been a wine estate since the 16th century, and 2010 marked a turning point in turning it into a true wine project. Telmo was joined by his sister Amaya, an anthropologist with a doctoriate from Oxford, intelligent and trained by Anna Claude Leflayve, owner of the Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy. Their return to the winery brought with them many changes, with them applying their own philosophys, based on the search for more intimate riojan wines, inspired by the Riojan towns where a few plots are explained in a single wine. Because of this, wines produced with grapes from neighbouring external suppliers which were historically were incorporated into the wines, were kept separate and began their own parallel path.

Remelluri now exclusively produces single estate wines, with the grapes taken from produces in the towns of Labastida and San Vicente being used to produce two new different wines. The vineyard is home to 200 different ploys, with an average size of 0.6 hectares spread over 3 small valleys in Remelluri, Valderremelluri and Villaesclusa, at the foot of Mount Toloño, where a spectacular 1,272 meters high limestone block protects the property from the Atlantic storms. The vineyards are cultivated with the utmost respect for the environment, following the practise of biodynamic agriculture, with no herbicides, mineral fertilizers and synthetic products being used.

The wines by the Bodega Remelluri.

Bodegas Remelluri
understands the importance and value of the terroir, grapes and vineyards, producing a small range of only five very personal wines that convey the full potential of their philosophy.

Remelluri Reserva. This is the original wine fromLa Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, made with the fruit from the most important vineyards of the property. It was the first riojan wine made on a single-vineyard property, inspired by the classic Medoc-Bordeaux method. The grapes come from the three valleys surrounding the winery, Remelluri, Valderremelluri and Villaescusa, which belong to the municipalities of Labastida (RIOJA ALAVESA) and Rivas de Tereso, hamlet that belongs to San Vicente de La Sonsierra (RIOJA ALTA). This wine is made with 4 different grape varieties, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. It undergoes fermentation with native yeasts, like all Remelluri wines, and is aged for 17 months in oak barrels from different backgrounds and sizes.

Remelluri Gran Reserva. This wine is only made during exceptional vintages. This wine is made using only the best plots of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Moscatel, Viura and Malvasia, with each plot home to a different microclimate, blended to create the property’s ideal and unique wine. The vineyards are organically cultivated, using biodynamic techniques, and the winemaking process is carried out using tradition methods. The wine undergoes fermentation using native yeasts.

Remelluri Blanco. This wine is a relatively new addition to the winery, and offers a reflection of the complexity of the different soils and orientations of the farm. This wine is a blend of 9 different grape varieties. Telmo purposefully avoids talking about the specific grapes that make up the blend as a way to shift the focus from variety to the of the site’s unique expression.  It is certainly the wine that best explains the character of the vineyard of Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri The fermentation is done with indigenous yeasts, in 1,200litre cement vats and stainless steel barrels and vats. It is aged for about 18 months in French oak barrels of different ages and sizes.

Lindes de Remelluri. These wines were first produced from the 2009 vintage and are a homage to the growers that have long worked for the estate and brought their grapes into Remelluri. Lindes actually means “borders” in Spanish, and they are made from vineyards in the surrounding villages of San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Labastida, perhaps the most interesting wine-growing towns of La Rioja. This collection has two different wines, Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de Labastida, and Lindes de Remelluri Viñedos de San Vincente. Both wines are made with the Tempranillos, Garnacha, Graciano and Viura grape varieties, as well as undergoing fermentation with native yeasts, and aged for 12 months in 225litre French oak barrels, of 5000litre French oak vats.
