Bodegas Mauro

Due to its location, Bodegas Mauro does not come under the DO Ribera Del Duero. However, this has not hindered the wineries outstanding success on the national and international scene. The winery produces wines under the Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León classification. Aside from bureaucratic constraints, Bodegas Mauro produces wines with great personalities, while respecting and nourishing the roots, tradition and the nature of the soils from where they came from. This is evident in their fantastic reds that are aged and produced in limited numbers.

Bodegas Mauro was founded back in 1980 in Tuedela de Duero, near Valladoid. It comes under the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León since it remains outside the official region of the DO Ribera del Duero.

The severe laws of any DO (Denominación de Origen) do not only influence the winery and vineyards that come under their classifications. Bodegas Mauro, for example, also maintains high regulation to ensure they produce wines of the highest standard. They production processes follow strict guidelines to the smallest detail, there are mandatory registration of vineyards, maximum production per hectare, the a maximum and minimum alcoholic strength, the minimum aging times by category as if it were the panacea of quality, and the use of only authorised varieties. In many cases, the results are nothing short of excellent.

Despite all of this, the classification of Vinos de la Tierra and Vinos de Calidad also play an important role in Spanish viticulture and guarantee certain level of quality, as well as protecting against counterfeiting and possible adulteration. But it is also true that today, the laws of some DO's need reform in order to fit with modern times, especially when some winemakers of our country are faced with the need to conquer new international market, as well as meeting and addressing new fashions and tastes in wine consumption.

History of the winery

The original winery was founded back in 1980 in Tudela del Duero. The winery began with 4 hectares of old vineyards, in an elegant XVII century restored mansion located in the town, which nowadays houses the aging cellar, with 2000 French and American oak barrels and a wine rack, since all of the production facilities moved in 2004 to the outskirts of the village.

Mariano García, who led 30 harvests of Vega Sicilia (1968-97), founded the winery and remains his alma mater. Today the winery is ran by his two sons: Albert who directs the commercial and managerial tasks; and Edward, who oversees the vineyard and wine production; who both share their time between their other winery in DO Toro, Maurodos in San Roman de Hornija. Besides his work at Vega Sicilia, Mariano Garcia has plenty of experience within in the industry, as a partner and founder of Aalto with Javier Zaccagnini, and adviser in the Masaveu, Enate or Astrales wineries.

Over the years the winery has acquired various plots of vineyards and in the late nineties they began to complement their main grape variety, Tinta Fina, by planting and growing other varieties such as Syrah and Garnacha grapes, contributing more complexity, fruitiness and tenderness to their wines. From its initial 4 hectares, the winery currently has 70 hectares of vineyards, planted mostly with Tinto Fino and Syrah, located in the municipalities of Tudela de Duero and Santibanez de Valcorba.

Work philosophy

Winemaker Eduardo Garcia joined the family business in 2001 after several years of experience outside of Spain, working in Cos d’Estournel (Bordeaux) or Ridge Vineyards (California). Since then, Garcia has helped transform the winery’s vineyards by introducing organic farming techniques. Currently all of the winery’s vineyards are organically cultivated, as well as 10-20% of the vineyards that have been collaborating with the winery over the past 15 years.

Another major change in recent years is reducing maceration times and remounted in order to moderate and maintain the maximum extraction of fruit and acidity. For Eduardo, the quality and care of vineyard is fundamental, and when flowering starts late, maturation is sped by the removal of secondary shoots.

The cellar also is home to 2,000 barrels, but did not begin to introduce new oak until harvest 2006, with only 25% now new oak. In the same way they are carrying out a reduction of the times of aging, especially in its high-end wines, such as Mauro VS and Terreus.

Mauro wines

The main wines from Mauro produced under the Mauro labelan emblem of the winery, made with Tempranillo and a small percentage of Syrah, with an average aging of 16 months in French and American oak barrels of different ages. It is a fresh and fruity wine, well delineated, with a firm structure polished tannins and well balanced.

Mauro VS (Vendimia Seleccionada - Selected Harvest) is its wine of excellence. The grapes used to make this wine come from a nine hectare estate located in the town of Santibáñez de Valcorba called Carramontemayor. The grapes used from this wine are taken from the oldest vines located at the highest altitudes of La Oliva, a vineyard of 14 hectares facing north, on limestone and poor soils in Tudela de Duero. This wine has been being produced since the 1994 harvest and develops remarkably in the bottle and has a good aging capacity. This wine is aged usually aged for around 30 months in oak, something that is not too common among modern reds in DO Ribera del Duero, but unlike other reds from the DO Ribera del Duero, this wine has the genius of Marino Garcia behind it. It is an elegant and discreet red, with great weight of red fruit and a lovely floral fragrance; dense and full, with a tight and extremely deep tannin that drives an end of restrained opulence.

Terreus is the wineries highest-end wine, and was first developed in 1996. The harvest comes from a single vineyard called Paraje de Cueva Baja, and is a 100% Tempranillo. The wine is produced in limited quantities, and is only produced in special vintages. There are a lot more concentration and intensity than the VS, but does not give up the wide and enveloping textures, which are features of the house.

The most recent development from the winery has been the launch of their first white wine, the Mauro Godello, which is made from grapes taken from El Bierzo but marketed under the VT Castilla y León. This is one of the virtues of not belonging to a D.O. This wine relies on the friendship between the Luna family from Bierzo and the Garcías. They have rented two vineyards from the Luna family in Villafranca del Bierzo in the DO Bierzo where they have planted a specific clone of Godello from Valdeorras. While Los Músicos has schist soils, El Rosal is mostly stony. Both are situated in the Villafranca del Bierzo in an area that blends soils from the mountain formations (clay and decaying slate) and the river (boulders), which gives the wine a strong character despite the relatively young age of the grapes. This is a very exclusive wine, which in its first vintage 2013 only 1,200 bottles were made. Concerning production, this wine undergoes cold maceration for 12 hours. Following this, the grapes are pressed and very light debourge before being moved to the winery Mauro in Tudela de Duero where it ferments and raised on lees in barrels for about nine months. It is a distinguished and mineral white, with white flowers, citrus and certain iodinated features; fibrous, wide, crisp texture and great length, even kind enough to age a few years.
