Bodegas LAN

D.O.: Rioja

When you first visit Bodegas LAN and set eyes on their 64,000 mageing cellar, you can’t help but be slightly overwhelmed. But behind their impressive facilities, home to 50,000 barrels (perhaps the largest in Spain), the winery continues to follow the philosophy, methods and techniques required to produce modern riojan wines of the 21st century. This huge project was launched back in 1972, and has since become one of the most modern and innovative wineries in Europe if not the world.

Bodegas LAN is full of meaning. The name itself is an acronym based on the initials of each of the three provinces that form the D.O.Ca. Rioja: Logroño (currently part of La Rioja), Alava and Navarra. Bodegas LAN is located in Fuenmayor and was founded back in 1972 by a group of industrialists from the north of Spain, including Rumasa and Marcos Equizábel, then Garbriel Celaya (Group Celaya) appeared, who also acquired the winery Santiago Ruiz in Rias Baixas. The early years were years of renewal, effort, study and strong investments, where Celaya Group together with a young and dynamic team, led by Javier Echarri and winemaker Victor Leiva, cemented what is today a strong standing winery which combines the necessary commercial aspect with the expression of the best human qualities, with a capacity for the constant search for perfection, with a vision and a passion for wine.

Nevertheless, initially the company`s profits were scarce, resulting in 80% of Bodegas LAN and the Santiago Ruíz winery being sold to the venture capital firm Mercapital in 2002. Ten years later, in 2012, the two wineries was incorporated into the Portuguese group Sogrape Vinhos, which has since expanded into the Ribera del Duero, with Bodegas Marqués de Burgos, and into Rueda, with the Duquesa de Valladolid winery.

Sogrape Vinhos is the largest wine group in Portugal and belongs to the Portuguese Guedes family, who founded the company back in 1942. It is known around the world for its Mateus Rose brand, as well as a large range of wines, including Offley and Ferreira, and the wine brands Callabriga and Pena de Pato.

The company also currently operates in: Mendoza, Argentina; New Zealand, with the acquisition of Viña Framingham; and Chile, with Chateau Los Boldos.

The Property and Work Philosophy.

Bodegas LAN is situated in an industrial estate just outside of Fuenmayor, and is home to 72 hectares of vineyards, Viña Lanciano. The winery also overseas another 400 hectares of vineyards, which the winery closes monitors throughout all stages of the growing cycle, plot by plot, helping their suppliers make decisions on all aspects of the viticulture carried out, from pruning, fertilizing, and most importantly of all, determining the right time to harvest.

María Barúa joined the LAN team in 2002, a licensed chemist and oenologist from the University of La Rioja. She has since assumed technical direction of the company, leading a diverse team that boasts experience and youth, a love for wine and the expertise in order to produce wines given the profile and character of the terroir.  Respecting the earth and the balance of nature is part of our identity: hence, LAN’s efforts to support sustainable viticulture practices, an exquisite care for our grapes and the absence of any kind of chemical fertilizers.

Our Viña Lanciano vineyard lies on a breathtaking natural meander, shaped for thousands of years by the swells and low water periods of the river Ebro. This acts as a natural border between Rioja Alta and the Rioja Alavesa, sheltered by the Sierra de Cantabaria, where small plots of their premium wines are produced. Divided into 24 plots, the winery cultivates Tempranillo, Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha vines, aged on average up to 60 years, enjoy a unique climate and terroir. Protected from the winds and cold weather by the Sierra Cantabria and its proximity to the river, the estate follows sustainable viticulture practices in search of balance, a reinforcement of the plants’ natural defences and a suitable environment that favours aeration and optimum sunshine levels on the bunches. Grapes are hand-harvested throughout the estate when they reach their ripening peak. Once in the winery, bunches and grains are individually selected by hand to ensure that only perfect clusters make it through to the next stage.

The winery is home to stainless steel facilities and is temperature controlled, with American, French (from Allier), Limousin, Nevers, Central European, Hungarian and Bosnian oak barrels, all 225 litre capacity in placed in pyramids 14 stories high, with a unique and patented system ensures that each barrels only supports its own weight.

Each type of oak has been carefully studied, each providing its own sense of character. Thus the French oak from various forests provides soothing aromas of vanilla, cloves and Choclate, while the American oak from Ohio and Missouri gives aromas of cocoa and aromatic plants. Oak from the Causcasus and the Adyghe Republic is less fragrant and therefore more respectful to the wine, while mixed barrels, made with American oak staves and French oak heads, provide the wines with a unique personality.

The winery’s ageing cellar covers an impressive 6,400m2 and a truly a sight to behold. All of the wines held in the barrels are identified and controlled via a microchip embedded into the wood of the barrel. This microchip informs the winemakers of every moment and the exact progress and state of each barrel and wine, from the origin of the barrel, the type of oak, the degree of toasting (of the oak), the variety and origin of the grape and wine, the date of filling, the number and date of each racking etc. For this, two spectacular computerized overhead cranes automatically locate the barrels and perform the exact movements for the racking of wines, as well as the stacking of barrels. Care is taken to avoid any sudden movement, which would making it impossible for the sedimentation of the lees on the bottom of the barrel during the course of the ageing process.

The wines by Bodegas LAN are filtered and bottles under total asepsis, ensuring that the wines achieve a microbiological stability, and to prevent the wine from being disrupted during its ageing in the bottle, or reductive ageing, allowing it to reach its fullness, roundness, and refinement on the racks of the cellar. However, before reaching this point, also it has carried out a thorough inspection and cleaning of all materials, such as cork, bottle, capsule, etc. Another requirement for quality, for which Bodegas LAN requires all its suppliers are approved by ISO 9002.

The character of the final wine somewhat determined by a long, balanced and careful ageing process, where the wood plays a major role from the beginning, providing the wines with a Riojan character, but with a new and different style.

Wines by Bodegas LAN

Bodegas LAN offers a large and complete range of wines, offering both a traditional range of rioja wines with their LAN Crianza, Rerseva and Gran Reserva, as well as their lines of more modern wines, with single estate and high-end wines, such as LAN D-12, Viña Lanciano, Culmen and LAN a Mano.

LAN Crianza. This wine is a blend of three different grape varieties, tempranillo (85%), garnacha (10%) and mazuelo, and is aged for 12 months in oak barrels. This wine envelops the nose, with notes of fresh and ripe fruit, balsamic hints, all beautifully fused between spicy notes of vanilla, toasted and white wood. In the mouth it is tasty, refreshing, with an acidity that freshens the sweet and fine tannins that enhance the presence of the spicy red fruit and toasted vanilla.

LAN Reserva is a blend of two different grape varieties, Tempranillo (92%) and Graciano (8%), taken from 20-25 years old vines coming from parcels located in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. The wine is aged inhybrid barrels (American oak staves and French oak heads) for at least 16 months, followed by 24 months in bottle. This wine has a good intense aroma, with notes of ripe red fruits, vanilla and spices, wrapped in toasted, smoky notes of fine wood. The mouth is structured, fleshy and filling, with a wide range of aromatic notes of black fruit jam and spices.

LAN Gran Reserva. Produced with 90% Tempranillo from a selection of the best grapes coming from 30 year-old, low yielding bush vines in the Rioja Alta and 10% Mazuelo from the winery’s Viña Lanciano vineyard. This wine is aged for 24 months in American and French oak barrels. The nose is dominated by notes of black fruit, figs and fruit compote, wrapped in notes of cococoa, balsamic and black pepper. This wine has a good structure and mouthfeel.

Viña Lanciano. This wine is a blend of three different grape varieties, Tempranillo (85%), Graciano (10%) and Mazuelo (5%), and is the result of a selection of grapes hand harvested from vines planted over 30 years ago in our Viña Lanciano vineyard. The grapes were hand allocated in our selection tables, where only those grains in perfect sanitary and ripeness conditions are allowed into the next phase of vinification. This wine is aged for 12 months in French oak barrels from Tronçais, and 6 months in oak barrels from the Russian Causcasus. The wine boasts an intense aroma of very ripe fruits that convey the rich Tempranillo varietal character, ennobled by Vanilla and spicy oak. The palate has an excellent tannic structure and acidity that gives the wine a wide palatal sensation, with notes of ripe fruit and wood that softens the wine. A remarkable wine from Rioja able to boast of the region’s characteristic elegance and finesse.

LAN D-12.This wine is produced with two grape varieties, Tempranillo (98%) and Mazuelo (2%),  selected by hand from two plots in the town of Haro (Rioja Alta) and two plots in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). D-12 is homage to the workers of LAN. The name is a reference to “DEPOSIT  12”, the stainless steel tank that each vintage holds those wines that according to LAN winery personnel have the most outstanding attributes each year. The wine is aged for twelve months in new American and French oak barrels followed by twelve months of rounding in the bottle prior to release. The American oak was sourced in the Appalachians and the French oak in the forests of Chateauroux and Loches. The extra-fine grained wood was air dried for 36 months. On the nose this wine is complex and intense, with a presence of red fruit and liquorice characteristic of the Tempranillo variety, with nuances of cocoa and pastries, smoky combined with aromas of red fruit and floral touches, mainly of violets. Tasty, round and with a silky mouthfeel, the hints of liquorice and black pepper return on the palate in its persistent finish.

LAN A Mano, a limited edition wine. This wine is a blend of three different grape varieties, Tempranillo (80%), Mazuelo (8%) and Graciano (12%), all hand-harvested from 35 and 40 year-old vines in the “Viña Lanciano” estate. The grapes were hand selected in two sorting tables so that only those grains in perfect sanitary and ripeness conditions are allowed into the next phase of vinification. This wine is aged for 7 months in new French oak barrels and a further 6 months in new Russian oak barrels. Bottled unfiltered and unclarified to maintain all the subtle aroma and flavours. This wine offers aromas of ripe fruit: plums, blackberries, currants, balsamic notes, with hints of sweet spices, and mineral notes. The palate is very structured, powerful, fleshy, with large volume, with a pleasant and long finish.

Culmen Reserva. This is a limited edition wine, produced only during excellent vintages. The wine is a blend of two different grape varieties, Tempranillo (85%) and Graciano (15%), hand-harvested from 40 to 60 year-old vines planted in our “Pago El Rincón” plot, located within the “Viña Lanciano” estate. The grapes are manually selected in our two sorting tables; only those grains in perfect sanitary and ripeness conditions are allowed into the next phase of vinification. The wine is then aged for 24 months in new French oak barrels from the Tronçais and Allier forests, followed by 20 months of rounding in the bottle in the perfect temperature and humidity conditions of the winery’s cellar. This wine is very complex and elegant on the nose, with highlights of ripe red fruit, blackberries along with balsamic notes and notes of pastry, with hints of spiced nutmeg and cinnamon, as well as smoky notes. The palate is very complex and clean, with plenty of sensations, silky and full-bodied. This is a structured wine, powerful and fleshy mouthfeel, giving way to a long and persistent finish.
