Bodega Juan Gil is one of the most important wineries of the D.O. Jumilla. The town of Jumilla (Murcia) produce more than 3 million kilos of grapes, mainly of the Monastrell variety, which they then export to all corners of the world.

HISTORY OF THE WINERY

The story of Bodega Juan Gil started in 1916 when Juan Gil Gómez built a small winery in the centre of Jumilla (Murcia), an agricultural population of great importance in the winemaking world and the capital of the Denomination of Origin that bares its name, D.O. Jumilla.

Two generations later the heirs of the family, Juan and Paco Gil González, decided to build a new winery on the family owned estate ten kilometres north-east of the town in the area called "Término de Arriba", known for having the highest altitude in Jumilla and a privileged location for grape growing.

PHILOSOPHY OF WORK

This new strategic location allows the winery´s technicians to monitor the vineyards better, and obtain a quick response time when doing the work required to produce the highest quality grapes.

This winery´s vineyards have sandy-loam, calcareous soils, with lots of stones on the surface and a lack of nutrients. Despite its proximity to the Mediterranean, the climate is continental and there are huge changes in temperature between day and night with differences reaching 20º, and very hot summers and very cold winters. The old, dry vineyards are grown in extreme conditions with little rain. All these factors result in a low number of grapes produced but a very high quality.

Although they also grow other varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the main variety grown is the Monastrell variety native to the area, with Jumilla being the most important producer of this grape variety in the world.

The location of the winery allows a swift transport of the grapes to the winery, thus maintaining the grapes´ optimum conditions for making them into wine.

Juan Gil winery mixes tradition, knowledge contributed by the different generations and modern facilities that allow them to use the most modern technology for the winemaking process.

BODEGA JUAN GIL WINES

The wines from Bodega Juan Gil strongly reflect the character of the Monastrell variety, a climate with big variations in temperature and poor soils. The grape is small and concentrated, with a strong fruity charge and intense aromas. Juan Gil 4 meses and Juan Gil 12 meses are two single-varietals of Monastrell which have been aged for 4 and 12 months respectively. Juan Gil 18 meses is a blend of Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah and has been aged for 18 months.
