Bodegas Emilio Moro

Emilio Moro dedicated his whole life to wine, and was a lover of everything to do with wine culture. He started off by treading the grapes himself and selling this wine in his family's winery. He later created the winery that bears his name, Bodegas Emilio Moro, a family-run winery that has now become one of the Ribera del Duero's benchmark wineries.

HISTORY OF THE WINERY

Emilio Moro was born in 1932 in Pesquera de Duero, a town with a long winemaking history, in the area known as the Ribera del Duero's "Golden Mile", due to the high concentration of wineries and the high quality of the wines they produce.

At the age of 14 Emilio was already treading the grapes and helping make the wine in his family's winery. They sold his wine to neighbours and to the seasonal workers in the fields, and his father drove to nearby towns to sell the wine.

Don Emilio learnt everything from his father - love for the land and the vines, care and sacrifice, and the techniques required for making wine.

He began planting excellent 100 year old Tinta del País vines in all of his estates.

In 1987 Don Emilio and his sons, José and Javier, officially opened the winery.

In 2008 after the passing of Don Emilio, the winery was left in the hands of his sons, the current owners.

PHILOSOPHY OF WORK

Bodegas Emilio Moro have 4 plots of vineyards planted with excellent Tempranillo from their oldest vines.

Finca Resalso was planted in 1932, the year when Emilio Moro was born, and is currently used as the winery's genetic reserve.

Finca Camino Viejo is located on a very steep hillside, mostly made up of clay, although some parts contain limestone. It is located at 887 metres altitude. The wine Malleolus comes from these vineyards.

Valderramiro is the winery's oldest vineyard, planted in 1924. This plot is mainly made up of clay, with some limestone deposits. Malleolus de Valderramiro comes from these vineyards.

Sanchomartín was planted in 1944, with limestone rich soils and a bit of clay. Malleolus de Sanchomartín comes from this group of vineyards

The winery is equipped with the latest technology, although the production methods are the same as those used by the current owners' Grandfather.

In the vineyard they decide which deposit each plot goes into according to the ripening of the grapes. The winery is made up of four buildings with different heights, to make the most of the force of gravity.

Bodegas Emilio Moro have over 3000 barrels, including both French and American oak, which are used for 3 years. The first year is for premium wines and the second two for all the other wines. After ageing in the barrel, their wines rest in the bottle in a 4500 metre cellar, big enough to fit up to 3 million bottles of wines, before being released onto the market.

BODEGA EMILIO MORO WINES

All of Bodega Emilio Moro's wines are Tinta del País (Tempranillo) single-varietals.

Finca Resalso is the baby of the family. Emilio Moro Crianza is aged for 12 months in the barrel.

Malleolus is without a doubt the emblem of the winery. A great wine, very tasty and balanced.

And finally, Malleolus de Valderramiro and Malleolus de Sanchomartín. Two excellent single-estate wines that strongly express the character of the terroir.
