Bodegas Contador

D.O.: Rioja

Bodega Contador is a Rioja winery owned by Benjamín Romeo, one of the greatest Spanish winemakers of all time. Contador, his star wine, received 100 Parker Points, the maximum number possible, in two different vintages (2004 and 2005). An honour very few wines get, not only in Spain, but in the whole world.

HISTORY OF THE BODEGA
The name of Bodega Contador is intrinsically linked to the oenologist and vine-grower Benjamín Romeo. From 1985 to 2000 Benjamín was the oenologist at Artadi, a winery that played a decisive role in the transformation experienced by the Rioja region in the 90s. Artadi, along with other wineries, realized that in order to make extremely high quality wines, they needed to make wines that not only reflected the wood from their ageing, but also expressed the characteristics of the land and the vineyard from where they came.

In 1995 Benjamín acquired a century old cave under the San Vicente de la Sonsierra castle. In 1996 he made the first vintage of his wine La Cueva de Contador.

In 1999, in the same cellar, he made the first vintage of the legendary Contador, a wine that was destined to rewrite the history of winemaking in Spain.
Contador owes its name to the person responsible for counting the grape skins on their entry into the cellar, who was known as the "contador" (grape counter).

His first vintages were so well received that Benjamín decided to leave Bodega Artadi and devote himself full time to his personal project. In the following years he began to buy small plots of old vineyards.

Benjamin began renovating the garage in his parent's house in San Vicente and equipping it for winemaking, thus increasing the winemaking capacity of his cellar.
These wines that he meticulously made in his garage with few resources, earned 100 Parker Points
Not only one vintage, but two (2004 and 2005). An accomplishment that very few wines in the world achieve.

The new winery, Bodega Contador, was opened in 2008, an ambitious project that met the expectations generated and the prestige gained from getting 100 Parker Points consecutively.
PHILOSOPHY OF WORK
A key to all work carried out at Bodega Contador is the meticulous attention paid to detail at every stage of the production process. This strong and close relationship with the wine gives real meaning to the concept of "vino de autor" (signature wine).

An example of this is Benjamín personally selecting the cork oak from the Sierra de Espadán de Castellón, whose cork oak is used to make the corks for his bottles of wines.

Bodega Contador has more than 50 plots with different soils, microclimates, orientations… which allow them to make wines of great complexity.

In accordance with his belief that "A great wine begins in the vineyard, not in the cellar", Benjamín demonstrates love and respect for the land and its environment.
Bodega Contador adhere to biodynamic farming guidelines. The soil is only fertilized with organic material, made in the winery from sheep manure. Only non-residual products are used, to maintain the perfect health of the grapes.

The majority of the vines are goblet trained. Bodega Contador's viticulturists leave one single bud per shoot, to limit production and maximize grape quality.

The harvest is carried out by hand. The period from picking the grapes to their arrival at the winery never exceeds 30 minutes, to avoid hindering their potential.

Another meticulous detail is the selection process. The grape bunches are hand selected in the winery and, after destemming, the individual grapes are selected as well.

After the alcoholic fermentation (at a controlled temperature) is completed the malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, filling the barrels with wine by gravity.

The ageing takes place in French oak barrels and Benjamín, yet again taking care of every last detail, travels to France to personally select the best oak, which is used in the most prestigious cooperages to make the barrels.
