Bodegas Castaño

D.O.: Yecla

Ever since its founding in 1950, Bodegas Castaño has stood out for its pursuit of quality in each and every one of the wines it produces. Located in the Yecla Denomination of Origin, this vineyard produces several varieties, but it is the Monastrell, by far the most cultivated, that is the undisputed king of the cellar.

HISTORY OF THE WINERY

It all started in 1950 when Ramón Castaño Santa, the son of local winemakers, expanded the family vineyard and built an adjacent cellar. However, it was not until 1980 that he started bottling his own wine.

In the nineties, his three sons Ramón, Juan Pedro and Daniel joined him to help launch the winery on an international scale. Bodegas Castaño would later go on to receive countless accolades and critical reecognition.

Owing to the numerous awards received both nationally and internationally, the three brothers decided to improve the technology of their facilities, becoming authentic pioneers and innovators in Yecla, a Denomination of Origin that is otherwise very traditional and conservative.

In fact, in 2002 they built an ageing cellar with capacity for 500,000 bottles and a cold chamber for pre-fermentive maceration. They also gradually added modern maceration, stabilization and vinification equipment.

All these measures are taken with the same final goal: quality, the main goal of Bodegas Castaño ever since its foundation.

PHILOSOPHY

Bodegas Castaño is located in the town of Yecla, north of the province of Murcia. The vineyard spans 500 hectares, split into four large plots within the Yecla Denomination of Origin.

These plots are: Las Gruesas, with rocky soil rich in limestone; Espinal, with soil rich in clay; Pozuelo, which also has high levels of clay; and Arabí, with rocky soil.

The weather in Yecla is very different from the rest of Murcia. Its continental climate means there is great temperature fluctuation between the summer and the winter, and between day and night. This Denomination of Origin, limited to the city limits of Yecla, is located 400 to 800 metres above sea level.
Bodegas Castaño produces Monastrell, Garnacha, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Garnacha Tintorera, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Macabeo grapes, all distributed among the four plots according to the type of soil required by each variety. Even though many varieties are produced, the undisputed king is the Monastrell, present in all Castaño wines. It is perfectly adapted to the local weather and huge temperature fluctuations characteristic of Yecla.

WINES BY BODEGAS CASTAÑO

Bodegas Castaño's constant pursuit of quality is demonstrated in its wines. We present you with the following wines, in which Monastrell grapes take centre stage.

Solanera, a red wine made from Monastrell, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha Tinta grapes. The 2012 vintage impressed Robert Parkerso so much that he gave it no less than 94 Parker points.

Hécula, a red wine made from 100 percent Monastrell grapes, represents the best possible expression of the Monastrell.

And finally we have Castaño Casa Cisca, another single varietal red wine with a great Monastrell expression, with 16 months' ageing.
