Campo Viejo

D.O.: Rioja

The new winery of Campo Viejo opened its doors in 2001, replacing the old facilities from 1967. The facilities are situated on the outskirts of Logroño. The winery boasts an excellent location, on the top of a hill near Logroño, and although close to urban areas, it was in a fully rural environment with extensive vine crops. The top of the hill is flat like a plateau, covered with vineyards (contributing to the 1,900 hectares that supply the winery) and sweeping views of the Sierra de Cantabria, the Ebro valley and the capital of La Rioja. The facilities are split into two buildings, characterised by its simplistic nature, with straight lines, clear block colours, and facades with carved stone and wooden elements. The real body of the winery is underground, carved into the mountain in the manner of old cellars, all in agreement with the oenological and architectural criteria.

The grapes and wine are moved and decanted through the use of gravity at all stages of the winemaking process, while the aging rooms possess similar conditions to the natural caves. Furthermore, since many of the facilities are located underground, the construction of the winery is almost unnoticeable, and does not alter the character of the landscape.

On the one hand, the grape and wine move by gravity throughout the process of making and aging rooms possess similar to those of traditional caves natural conditions. Furthermore, the construction goes virtually unnoticed from the outside, without altering just the landscape.

Underground the winery boasts spectacular dimensions, and is perhaps one of the largest in Europe, at 38.000m2, with metres over 16 metres tall, with a total capacity of 30 million litres; with a collection 70,000 barrels of French and American, and space for 6 million bottles. These impressive facilities are used to produce over 20 million litres of crianza, reserva and gran reserva wines, under the labels of Campo Viejo, Alcorta and Azpilicueta. The combination of the avant-guard architecture, precise engineering with 21st century winemaking come together in this catedral of wine tha perfectly blends the best of Riojan tradition with modern quality requirements.

In 2011, the Campo Viejo winery was awarded with the AENOR certification for its carbon footprint in accordance with the ISO 14064 standard worldwide. Furthermore, it became the first winery to obtain the “Q” Tourism Quality certification and the first Spanish winery to receive the Q Mark for Tourist Quality, as well as being awarded the Premio Vinum Nature Acción Sostenible in recognition of their good environmental practices.

Technical direction at the winery is led by Elena Adell. Born in Logroño, Adell is an agricultural engineer, who specialises in Viticulture and Oenology, with specific training in quality and the surrounding environment. She began her professional career at the Consejería de Agricultura y Alimentación de La Rioja (Ministry of Agriculture and Food of La Rioja), dealing with the deparment responsible for viticulture, before becoming part of Bodegas AGE (DOCa Rioja) as Director of Quality. In 1997, after the incorporation of AGE to Bodegas y Bebidas group, she took charge of the quality division of the Group, and since 1998 is the Director of Winemaking Bodegas Campo Viejo, while coordinating the oenological activity of other wineries the Rioja DOCa assigned to the company.

His right arm is Clara Canals, born in Tarragona in 1982, moving to Logroño in 1984 his family moved to Logrono, where she grew up. She has a degree in Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Navarra, with Masters in Enology, Viticulture and Marketing. She has a very extensive international experience, working in wineries in Australia, Argentina, California, France, New Zealand and South Africa. She has worked at Bodegas Campo Viejo under the leadership of Elena Adell since 2011, helping create modern and innovative wines, especially designed to be enjoyed by young people.

Wines by the Campo Viejo winery.

Campo Viejo produces a classic collection of Riojan wines. First there is Campo Viejo Blanco, a dry white wine produced with a blend of three different grape varieties, Viura, Verdejo, Chardonnay and Tempranillo Blanco. 10% of the wine is aged for 3 months in new American oak barrels. It is a wine with intense flavors and freshing aromas of white fruit.

Campo Viejo Rosado. This is a single variety wine made exclusively with the Tempranillo grape. It is aged on its lees for two months, and offers aromas of strawberries, plums and blackberries, with floral notes of roses and violets. This is a fragrant wine, round, smooth and delicate on the palate.

Cava Brut Reserva Campo Viejo. Like many classic cavas, this is a blend of Parellada, Xarel.lo  and Macabeo. This cava is aged for 18 months, and is fresh, well balanced, and elegant on the palate, leaving the excellent sensation of freshness.

Cava Campo Viejo Brut Rosado. Made exclusively with the Trepat variety, this cava is aged for 9 months. This cava is pleasent yet powerful, with an intense presence of mature red fruits, with a pleasent sensation on the palate, rounded and a lingering aftertaste.

Campo Viejo Reserva. This wine is a blend of three different grape varieties, Tempranillo (85%), Graciano (10%) and Mazuelo (5%), and is aged for 18 months in American and French oak barrels. This red wine has a great balance between the fruit (cherries, black plums and ripe blackberries) and the clear tones from the wood (clove, pepper, vanilla and cocoa).

Campo de Viejo Gran Reserva. This wine is made with the same blend as the Reserva, but is aged for 24 months in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels. This wine offers fruity aromas of ripe red fruits such as blackberrys, blueberrys, cranberrys and black plums. It is extremely well balanced, with a mild flavor that fills the mouth with sweet and refined tannins and a long, and elegant finish and scented with finishing touches of coffee with chocolate.

Dominio Campo Viejo. This wine is a blend of three different grape varieties, Tempranillo (90%), Graciano (5%) and Mazuelo (5%), which undergo six different individual vinification processes from 5 different plots of land, and is aged for 11 months in French oak barrels from forests of Troncais and Bertranges.
