Priorato

La Rioja is a Qualified Designation of Origin since 1991.
Natural conditions such as the climate and especially the soil have contributed to split La Rioja into three areas:
Rioja Alta: With a moderate continental climate influenced by the Cantabrian sea, this vineyards are spread over calcareous and clay soils in areas of a gentle topography. The main strain grown is the Tempranillo, which provides balanced and stable red wines, with an attractive ruby colour and elegant aromas, especially suitable for ageing.
Rioja Baja: The climate and fertile nature of these soils provide good harvests and perfectly ripe grapes. The drier climate with a certain Mediterranean influence and ferrous and clay soils enhance the production of honest, aromatic and not very acid Grenache red wines.
Rioja Alavesa: These rugged and calcareus lands are very suitable for the vines. Summers are short and winters are mild with some frost but little snow. The vineyard is oriented to the south and sheltered by the Cantabrian Mountains.
Rioja red wines are mainly produced with Tempranillo and both the young (harvest) wines and those that are aged reach high standards of quality.
On the basis of Tempranillo, and with small and wisely studied proportions of Garnacha, Graciano Mazuelo the great Rioja wines of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are produced. This is the case of wines such as the Marqués de Riscal Castillo Ygay, other wines comparable in quality and many of the most famous wines in the world.
Young and crianza white wines and rosé wines of high quality should not be forgotten either.
