The Designation of Origin Ribera del Duero includes municipalities that belong to the provinces of Burgos, Soria, Segovia and Valladolid. This is a large production area where the main wine producers are in the towns of Pedrosa del Duero, La Aguiera, Gumiel de Hizán, Aranda de Duero, La Horra, Roa, Peñafiel and Valbuena del Duero.
The climate is continental, very dry and windy and the winters are very hard, with frequent frosts, although rare snowfall.
In the vineyards of the Designation of Origin Ribera del Duero there is a variety that far surpasses all others: the Tinta del PaÃs, an excellent variety very similar to the Tempranillo.
The red wine of Ribera del Duero is aromatic, very fruity and bright red when young and smooth, and velvety, with elegant aromas and flavours that are noticed with its ageing. Some examples of this are the wine Pago de Carraovejas Crianza or the wines by Carmelo Rodero.
Fresh ('clear') and easy drinking rosé wines are also typical of Ribera del Duero. Its color is very attractive and its alcoholic content is moderate.
