Priorato

After its regulation was ratified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Foodstuff in July 2002, this Designation of Origin is the inheritor of the sub area known as Falset within the Designation of Origin Tarragona, whose geographical area coincides with this DO substantially.
The production area of Montsant wines occupies part of the central sector of the province of Tarragona, covering almost entirely the production zone of the Denomination of Origin Priorat. It is a mountainous area dominated and protected from the continental winds by the mountain after which this designation of origin is named. It belongs to the Catalan pre-coastal mountain range whose soils, mostly composed of granite, without forgetting its Palaeozoic slate content. This soils show brown hues, light texture, are poor in lime and slightly acid.
The climate is harsh and cold, with acceptable rainfall (an average of 650 mm per year) and high luminosity. The average temperature is around 15ºC.
The most characteristic wines of the area, such as the Ã‰tnic Crianza or the wines of Celler de Capçanes, show an intense red colour and are widely fleshy. These wines are made from the local varieties Garnacha and Mazuela, sometimes completed with Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Merlot or Syrah.
It is also worth highlighting the interesting liqueurs, mellow and natural sweet wines of the area.
