Priorato

This designation, adopted in 1999 by the Generalitat of Catalonia and ratified by the General State Administration in 2001, production area extends almost the entire surface of wine grapes in this Autonomous Community, although the number of acres enrolled is much lower.
Indeed the production area includes more than 340 Catalan municipalities, belonging to the four provinces of the autonomous region, overlapping production areas of the other ten appellations of origin recognized to date in Catalonia (Alella, Empordà-Casta Brava Conca de Barberá, Costers del Segre, Montsant, Penedès, Pla de Bages, Priorat, Tarragona and Terra Alta), in addition to the entire area of the Designation Catalan Cava.
Also, the varieties accepted for the production of wines with this DO are almost all statutorily authorized in the Autonomous Community of Catalonia: 25 varieties, including 13 white and 12 inks.
As might be expected, therefore, this designation accommodates a variety of wines that have to respond to any of the following categories: white, red, rosé, sparkling and liqueur. Being able, still wines, have experienced or not, some degree of aging. May hold under the conditions and duration of this process, the terms "aging", "reserva" or "gran reserva".
