Mencía

Grape variety introduced and cultivated mainly in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula since the days of ancient Rome. After recovering from disaster, the phylloxera epidemic of the late nineteenth century and caused a serious economic crisis in its traditional growing areas, is used for the production of aromatic and fruity wine, with intense color and breeding possibilities. The variety produces small, compact clusters, with medium sized berries with ellipsoidal shape. Juices or musts are colorless and neutral flavor, with a high sugar content but low acidity, especially those resulting from more mature fruits. The reds made from grapes Mencia, known for their ability to aging, with a characteristic velvety palate, without neglecting the optimum conditions for this variety in the development of young red wines. Rosé wines are aromatic and fruity, bright, soft light. Their distribution is mainly located in El Bierzo, and in areas of southeastern Galicia, which focuses on DO Ribeira Sacra, Monterrei and Valdeorras.
