Characteristics of Loxarel Amaltea

Loxarel Amaltea is a red wine from the Penedès produced by the Loxarel winery. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The grapes come from vineyards planted on the Can Mayol estate in Vilobí del Penedès. They are located at about 300 metres of altitude. The winery uses biological and biodynamic agriculture. Every four years manure is used as a fertilizer.

The harvest is done manually. The grapes are destemmed and macerated in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 10 ° C.

Loxarel Amaltea is fermented for 15 days at a temperature of between 20º and 25º. Each variety undergoes this process separately.

Finally, Loxarel Amaltea is aged for 10 months in Hungarian oak barrels. Only when aging has completed, the final blend is made.

The Can Mayol estate is where the Mitjans family has been working for five generations. The land on which the vines grow today was used as an aerodrome during the Spanish Civil War.

Bodega Loxarel plays with the name of one of the most typical varieties of the area, the Xarelo. Its work is to use the fruits of this rich land, both historically and for making wine.

Tasting notes Loxarel Amaltea

Sight Pretty cherry red. Medium high layer. Nose Balsamic touches are added to cocoa and currants. Taste Tasty and fresh. Very balanced. Notes of cocoa and roasted flavours typical of the barrel.
Sight A picota cherry colour, medium robe. Nose A fine nose with balsamic notes, cocoa and redcurrents. Taste Tasty, fresh and balanced. Nuances of cocoa and toasted notes from the barrel. Strawberry, pepper, coffee, balsamic notes.

Winery Loxarel

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, as well as those that demostrate instrisic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used!  But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from the Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, there is one common denominator of the wines from Penedès, and that’s balance and quality.
