The 2014 Decanter Awards: A look at the Spanish winners

The results of the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards, arguably one of the most prestigious international accolades in the industry, were published just a couple hours ago.

This prestigious awards ceremony, organised by the British magazine bearing the same name, is in its tenth edition and shows no sign of losing prestige. With 224 professional wine tasters, of which 66 are Masters Of Wine and 18 are Master Sommeliers, it currently boasts the best jury among wine awards. Also, over 15,000 wines entered this year’s competition.

But the Decanter World Wine Awards are also characterized by their great integrity and competence, and this is clearly reflected by the event’s strict commitment to blind taste testing.

The 2014 Decanter Awards have presented Spanish wines with no less than four International and 11 Regional Trophies; as well as 35 Gold, 180 Silver and 527 Bronze Trophies. In other words, an excellent showing. Then again, we are growing more and more accustomed to the growing recognition of the quality of our wines.

Here are some of our favourites:

Lustau 30 Years Old VORS, Amontillado. This VORS (Very Old Rare Sherry) was awarded Best In Show, and is obtained from a long Solera ageing process with the best Palomino grapes. Long and balanced. Sensational.

Finca el Terrerazo 2011. Let’s also take a moment to present you with the best wine made with Spanish grape varieties at the Decanter Awards. A sublime red produced with Bobal grapes by the Mustiguillo winery. Intense, elegant, warm and flavourful.  A real luxury!

Luis Cañas Selección de la Familia 2008. The best Reserva de la Rioja at the Decanter Awards bears the seal of the Luis Cañas winery. Voluminous from beginning to end, broad and persistent — and very intense. A remarkably interesting wine!
