Almirez 2012, by Teso La Monja. New vintage now available

It’s a happy start to the week at Decántalo, since we’re announcing the arrival onto our website of the new vintage of Almirez 2012, a wine that despite its short history, has already become a benchmark of the DO Toro.

Almirez 2012 is without a doubt responsible, along with the rest of bodega Teso la Monja’s wines and other jewels such as Numanthia, San Román and the always excellent wines by Bodega Matsu, for the tremendous international recognition that the Designation of Origin Toro has been experiencing recently.

We can only expect good things from a wine that bears of the signature of the Eguren family. And Almirez 2012 is an impeccable example of how the oenologist Marcos Eguren (Sierra Cantabria, Viñedos de Páganos….) knows the terroir of the area and its characteristics, making the most of the fruit and respecting the environment.

We find ourselves before one of the greatest exponents of well-made Tinta de Toro wines. It is direct and honest, like few wines are.

This wine bursts with intense, explosive and vibrant fruit. The fruit is honest from the moment we fill the cup, inundating it with a beautiful picota cherry colour. Clean and bright. Dense and glyceric.

Almirez 2012 has an incredibly fruity nose, but is also full of complexity which gradually increases little by little, giving us mineral notes, and chocolate, coffee and sweet spices, perfectly integrated, all the while masterfully accompanied by the fruit, the main protagonist.

In the mouth: warmth, power and persistence. A broad, bulky wine yet also refreshing and very enjoyable. Subtle. Heady. Pleasing. Delicious.

But what is most striking about Almirez 2012 is without a doubt it’s Price: €15.50. A bargain price for this amazing Toro wine. Robert Parker himself, referring to its previous vintage, said of this wine: “at this level of quality, one would expect the price to three digits or more”. Don’t wait any longer to try one of the best value wines in the DO Toro.
