Today we would like to talk on the wines from Rioja from a different viewpoint: the wines produced by Bodegas Palacios Remondo for more than six decades.
Since its foundation in 1948 in the municipality of Alfaro, the most Mediterranean side of La Rioja, Palacios Remondo has experienced a radical change triggered in 1999, when the heirs of José Palacios Remondo (under the directions of Álvaro Palacios) took control of the family’s winery. It is in that moment when the take off of this winery’s wines takes place. They start producing some of the most respected (and at the same time less orthodox) wines in the Designation of Origen Rioja.
Palacios Remondo’s vineyards in Alfaro, Wines from Spain
The winery Bodega Palacios Remondo provides wines which show their engagement with their origin, a great respect of the fruit and a minimal mechanization. Far from the exclusiveness of the great Rioja wineries, these wines’ prices are affordable for all budgets, while they keep their unbeatable value for money.
An evidence that wines by Palacios Remondo are a loyal reflection of the tradition in Rioja even if at the same time they can be considered as quite untypical, can be found when walking through the vineyards, since even if Tempranillo is grown in there (the queen variety in the QDO Rioja), in its fields spread over more than 100 hectares, the main variety grown is Grenache.
As a curiosity, did you know that in 1970, 80% of the vines planted in La Rioja were Grenache? This is one of the reasons why Bodegas Palacios Remondo pays tribute to this grape variety.
The winery Palacios Remondo produces four different wines: three red wines and a white wine.
Placet de Valtomelloso 2009 is the white wine by this winery. The production of Placet de Valtomelloso amounts to 30,000 bottles and it is made of 100% Viura grapes grown in vineyards at the foot of the mountains. Placet de Valtomelloso is an oily white wine with notes of exotic fruit and lots of harmony.
Palacios Remondo La Vendimia 2011 is the youngest of the red wines by Palacios Remondo. It is a blend of Grenache and Tempranillo which stays in the barrels for four months before being released to the market. Clean, bright, fruity, nice and fun wine. The less expensive way to make a first approach to this winery’s universe.
Palacios Remondo La Montesa 2009 is made of 75% Grenache, 20% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo. La Montesa is an expressive, mellow and blatant wine from Rioja, full of very ripe notes of red fruit, floral nuances and a subtle touch of wood provided by the new barrels.
Herencia Remondo Propiedad 2008, is made of Grenache mainly with a very short percentage of Tempranillo. Propiedad 2008 is a fresh and light wine, with a very long and pleasant mid palate. Far away from the traditional winemaking from Rioja.
