In summer, white wine is a must. High temperatures are linked to relax and holiday leisure and as a result, there is an increasing demand for fresh, fruity and easy-drinking wines to match a nice chat next to the beach. This is the life!
Generally, white wines are marked by their fresh and nice aromas (of citrus, tropical fruit, stone white fruit, pear, apple and flowers). Their perfect serving temperature ranges between 8 and 10ºC. This temperature is enough to enjoy the freshness of white wine and at the same time discover their richness, since a lower temperature would cause the lost of aromas and nuances.
Fortunately, in Spain there are as many white wines as tastes. But in this post, we decided to focus on white wines from Rueda, Rías Baixas and Penedés: three regions with a long winemaking tradition which produce white wine mainly, with very different climates, grape varieties and characteristics. Hope that these suggestions help you find your perfect white wine!
In the D.O. Rueda, the birthplace of Verdejo, white wines with a marked and renowned personality are traditionally produced. Generally, they show a pale colour, a great acidity and freshness and refined citrus, floral and tropical aromas. If you like what you just read, do not miss:
El Perro Verde 2012, by Bodegas Martivilli. A fresh, light and well-bodied varietal Verdejo wine.
Flor de Vetus Verdejo 2012. Its grapes come from vines grown at 850 metres altitude over the sea level in the most western area in the D.O. Rueda. In the palate, we find a very nice fresh, fruity and floral wine, with a good acidity. Highly recommendable.
Another of the queen varieties for summer is Albariño. Albariño wines can be classified among the best in the world of white wines. Albariño wines from the region of Rías Baixas are golden wines with very powerful fruity aromas, and a high minerality and unctuosity. They are great with seafood! These are some interesting options with a good value for money:
Terras Gauda 2012 is one of our favourite white wines. This elegant, deep wine with saline nuances has a marked Atlantic personality. It is worth tasting it.
Pazo de Señorans 2011 provides a marked expression of Albariño caracteristics. An elegant, fresh white wine with marked and intense nasal aromas which reflect the grapes typicity.
We could not forget mentioning those wines produced in the region of Penedés and the most representative variety in the area: Xarel·lo. White wines from Penedés are marked by their softness, silkiness and good acidity. If you have not yet tried them, here we have some suggestions:
Raventós i Blanc Silencis 2011, an elegant and fresh white wine full of fruit and mineral aromas. If you prefer dry wines, this one is a good option.
Parés Baltà Electio 2010. A great white wine from Penedés. Round and balanced wine with an excellent citric acidity which provides it with freshness. Long and persistent finish which leaves nice fruity and mineral sensations.
These are some of our suggestions for this summer. Do not miss them!
Nevertheless, not only white wines are a good option with warm temperatures, therefore in our next posts we will propose other kinds of wine which are perfect to be matched with summer time, such as young red wines, rosé wines or cava.
Meanwhile, start enjoying summer!
