New Parker points for Wines from DO Toro – August 2014

It has been a few days since we paid attention to Luís Gutiérrez´ latest review when he passed through Ribera del Duero, but today we are going to see how everything went with the wines from Toro, one of the Spanish Denominations of Origin noted last week.

At first glance, it was surprising to see that the magazine, The Wine Advocate, published points for 88 wines from the area, which was considerably less than the last revision of the DO figures from May 2013.

Luis Gutiérrez emphasizes the character of Toro´s red wines as hard and often wild. Wines that you need to know how to tame and in his own words: wines that have reached nobility and race. Additionally, he speaks about the inevitable comparison to the neighboring Ribera del Duero, and reaches the conclusion that Toro has a higher number of old vines that are able to withstand extreme and harsh weather. Furthermore, he shows general satisfaction with the position and planting areas chosen by the growers.

The list of Parker points for Toro wines crowns Teso la Monja 2010 as the best wine in the tasting with 95 Parker points. An extraordinary wine with biodynamic preparation and entirely handmade. This wine is a product of the knowledge and expertise of the Eguren family in Toro. An oenological jewel which is, unfortunately, only available to very few people who have the honour of dealing with the most expensive wine in Spain.

However, do not worry because if you do not want to spend almost 850€ on the presale of this wine, we have an alternative that has surprised many in assessments. These are wines from winery Hacienda Terra d’Uro.

Hacienda Terra d’Uro is a wine project that was born from the union between a Portuguese producer, Cristiano Van Zeller, and a restauranter from Valladolid, Oscar Garrote. Without a doubt, the honesty of their wines has captivated Luis Gutierrez.

We recommend that you do not miss the opportunity to enjoy Finca la Rana 2011 which was awarded 92 Parker points.
