Mother’s Day presents

Mother’s Day is round the corner in Spain, and at Decantalo we’ve been drawing up a list of ideal wines to give as presents to our mothers.

To save you reading time, we’ll tell you from the outset that if you’re looking for a little fruity wine, in line with the myth that women like easy wines, then this post is not for you.

For a long time, people have wrongly associated certain profiles and types of wine with women’s tastes. The wines we’re talking about are very fruity whites and rosés. But this false myth was finally buried in 2011 with a study carried out by Vinexpo on more than 10,000 European women, in which it was shown that women prefer red wine.

To be exact, and focusing on the subject of the article in question, the study showed that 58% of women over 46 years old prefer red wine to any other type of wine.

So if you’re thinking of giving your mother wine for Mother’s Day, don’t fall for the stereotype, and buy your mum a good wine. Here are some suggestions they’ll love:

Amaren Reserva 2005. Bodegas Amaren was set up in 1995 as a tribute to Ángeles, the mother of Juan Luís Cañas, owner and manager of Bodegas Luís Cañas. Not surprisingly, Amaren literally means from the mother in Basque. A meaningful, but also extremely exquisite wine. A fine nose, elegant and complex. Fleshy, warming, velvety, full of nuances. A great wine.

La Mujer Cañón 2011, by Bodega Comando G, Fernando García, Daniel Gómez Jiménez-Landi and Marc Isart’s winery in the DO Vinos de Madrid. A grenache for the most beautiful mothers: complex and with character. Delicate mineral touches. Very broad in the mouth. An unusual wine to enjoy slowly.

Madremía 2011, by Bodegas Divina Proporción (DO Toro). Our last suggestion doesn’t only have an ideal name for the occasion; it’s also one of the best value wines of the year. A dazzling 100% tinta de toro wine. Truly excellent.

Dido Blanc 2012, from the creators of Venus La Universal. Although most women go for red, we don’t want to single out just red wines. If your mum likes white wine, we recommend this spectacular wine from the DO Montsant which bears the stamp of a great woman: Sarah Pérez, one of Spain’s best oenologists. A blend of grenache, macabeo and cartoixà that dazzles with persistence, elegance and minerality.

Señorío de Sarría Viñedo N° 5 2012. Like we said, our intention is not to alter your mother’s taste in wine. If she likes rosés (which is also possible), we offer nothing less the wine that was considered the Best Rosé Wine in Spain in the latest Nariz de Oro competition. This wine is fresh and contains lots of red fruit, but what makes it stand out is its body and unctuous texture. A real treat.

We hope that these five recommendations help you choose a good Mother’s Day present. And Remember:

At Decántalo we’re giving you a €5 discount on your next order (for orders over €60, up until the 11/5) with the code PARAMAMA

Now there’s really no excuse to not give your mum a great present. She deserves it!
