Characteristics of Antiquary

Antiquary 12 Year Old is a smooth, well-balanced, luxury blend with the mellowness expected of a top quality brand. Each whisky is at least 12 years old and has been selected to combine the strengths and subtleness of Scottish whisky at its best.
Tomatin Distillery is located in the Monadhliath Mountains. Its history stretches back to the 15th Century when drovers, bringing their cattle over high mountain passes to the market in Tomatin, filled their flasks from a still at the Old Laird's House, beside the current distillery buildings. A formal distillery was established on the site in 1897. At 315 metres above sea level it is one of the highest in the country.

In 1985 the Distillery was re-established as The Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd, thus securing the future of whisky distillation in the Monadhliath hills. Tomatin now operates 12 stills. in 2007 it produced 2.5 million litres.

Whisky distilling always requires good water. At Tomatin the Alt-na Frith (Free Burn), which springs from deep within the Monadhliath Mountains, supplies the distillery with all the water it requires. This is combined with top quality barley, and traditional techniques are employed in all 4 stages of distillation- malting, mashing, fermentation and distillation. Traditionally this whisky has been used to provide fillings for the major blended whiskies in Scotland, but the emphasis is now placed on the company's own brands, first class malt and blended whiskies which have all won major international awards.

Tasting notes Antiquary

Sight Gold. Nose Fresh and invigorating. Very malty sweet toffee with hints of bitter orange and lemon. Taste Full and smooth with a warming syrupy sweetness contributing to a burst of malty flavours. A long heather honeyed aftertaste and a dry oak spice finish.
